VIŅA HUELQUEN
The Bonus of Organic Wines

The enterprise that commercializes grapes and organic wines is betting on becoming successful in the wine market.

Viņa Huelquen originated in 1980 when Pietro Ravenna created a winery to produce wine. Twelve years later his son Francisco Ravenna became partner with the agronomists Victor Pinto and Sergio Guajardo, in order to give a new boost to the project focused in growing organic grapes since the year 2000. At present, the winery located in Paine has a capability of 1,6 million kilogrammes of grape grinding and 3 million liters of aging capability.

Francisco Ravenna General Manager of Huelquen is not worried by the competitors in the grape growing business because he assured, we are on a great location and we have the advantage of growing organic grapes. Wine industry shows a tendency toward specialization.

However the entrepreneur understands the highly competitive market abroad , due to the fact that Chile has to deal with countries like France and Spain where, as he pointed out they are learning from their past mistakes, they are planting in other locations producing important quantities of grapes, thus being able to offer a less expensive product than before, therefore it is more difficult for Chile to enter the external market. He also stressed that quality is a basic factor to have in mind in the highly competitive market abroad.

Nowadays the vineyard sells around US$ 550.000 of grapes, and exports nearly US$300.000 of wine at their main selling points in countries like Brazil, China, Switzerland, Colombia, Czech Republic and United States. Around 960 tons of grapes are produced at Huelquen, 20 % out of them is used in wine making, while the other 80% is sold to other wineries.
